Cross Connection Control/Backflow

The Tahoe City Public Utility District is responsible for protecting the public water supply from contamination or pollution as a result of the backflow of contaminants or pollutants through the customer's water service connection. The cross-connection control program is mandated by the State of California Department of Health Services.

To ensure our water supply is protected from cross-connections, District staff reviews construction plans for potential cross-connections, conducts field inspections of properties for potential cross-connections, inspects the installation of backflow prevention assemblies, monitors the operation of existing assemblies by requiring annual testing and conducts customer education on the importance of cross-connection control.

Backflow prevention assemblies must be tested annually, at a minimum, by a certified Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester. You will receive a notice from the District in advance of the test date. The following links provide you with our list of certified testers that you may hire and the current test report that the tester must use to report the results to the District.

2011 Residential Cross-Connection Survey

The Tahoe City Public Utility District (District) is once again conducting a written survey of all residential water services within the District.  The purpose of this survey is to identify certain equipment that you may have in your home, which could have an adverse affect on the public water supply.  If not properly protected, this equipment directly connected to your water service could create a hazardous condition within your home.  This situation is known as a cross-connection.  Installation of a backflow prevention assembly can protect your drinking water and the drinking water of your neighbors from harmful cross-connections.

The District is required by Title 17 of the California Administrative Code to protect the public water supply from the possibility of contamination or pollution by implementation of a cross-connection control program.  To accomplish this goal, the District has set forth a cross-connection control program, as described in Section 7 of the District’s Water Ordinance No. 263.  As part of this program, customers are required to install, report, and annually test backflow prevention assemblies to protect the public water system from any hazards that water industry experts deem a threat.

To help us determine the potential for cross-connections within your home, please complete the survey below and send to the Tahoe City Public Utilitiy District.

Please understand that the District is interested in protecting the public water supply, including the water inside your own home.  Identifying potential cross-connections with harmful substances and thereafter installing protective devices allows us to help you maintain a safe water supply within your home and within the community.

Thank you for your cooperation and your assistance in protecting the public drinking water.
